Aurora Pope's work is process driven. She may reposition or erase marks; establish, edit, and remove edges; and introduce various mediums and materials at any juncture. Each action leads to and informs the next. Often this process leaves behind scars, relics of decisions made during the painting's development, a recording of its history. Sometimes the scars become hidden by new layers of paint, as mute testimonies of discarded manifestations. With each change the entire composition shifts and adjusts. It is an organic process, demanding reciprocity, ensuring that a work-in-progress takes on a life of its own. In this way the painting is given a voice in its own creation, and the scars that mark its surface denote its stages of growth. It becomes memory.
